EMG/NCS: Electromyography and/or Nerve Conduction Studies

Our physicians perform EMG/NCS studies. Often these studies are ordered by another physician (Orthopedic Surgeon, Hand Surgeon, PCP, Neurosurgeon, etc.) who refers you to our clinic for this test. The test is often ordered to help determine the cause of pain, numbness, and/or tingling in your extremity. Common causes include Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Cubital Tunnel Syndrome, a Pinched Nerve in your neck or back, or Peripheral Neuropathy. The test is performed in our office by a physician. Unlike some practices we do not have technicians perform our tests. Our physicians perform the testing. Prior to the test our physician will do a thorough history and examination. Results are known immediately once the test is over and if you were referred for the test a report will be sent to the referring physician unless you tell us otherwise. The reason the test is important is because it may help guide clinicians as to the cause of your pain which in turn will help formulate the physician’s treatment plan.

IF YOU ARE HAVING AN EMG/Nerve Conduction Study done in our office:

  • Avoid wearing lotion, if possible, prior to the examination
  • Notify the physician of any blood thinners or stimulators (pain pumps, pacemakers, etc) during your visit
  • Arrive 15-20 minutes prior to you appointment to fill out paperwork
  • You will be able to go back to work or go about your day as planned after the test

SPASTICITY INJECTIONS/PUMP MANAGEMENT

Our physicians manage spasticity in a variety of ways. Oral medications can be effective but in certain cases injections of a spasticity medicine (Botox or Myobloc) may be needed depending on the severity of the spasticity and its effect on function. Other times management of pumps including Baclofen pumps may be in order. Spasticity is a very complicated issue that has effects on pain, rehab, and function. Our physicians specialize in the care of this and will determine the best approach after consultation.

JOINT/SOFT TISSUE INJECTIONS

Joint/Soft Tissue injections may be offered depending on the physician, diagnosis, and need.
